Issue

Issue:
On a small number of vehicles, the bolt that attaches the universal joint to the steering shaft may not have been properly tightened. As a result, the bolt may loosen over time. If this happens, a driver may hear a noise or notice play in the steering. If you continue to drive the car with this problem, this could cause a loss of steering control.

Safety Risk:
A loss of steering control could create a risk of a crash.

Corrective Actions:
BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the steering column shaft universal joint. Depending on the results of the inspection, the dealer will either replace the attachment bolt, or replace the steering column shaft, universal joint, and bolt.
